THE WEEK
There’s no mistaking early September for the end of August. The heave of the orange school bus grinding uphill in early morning marks time, the sunshine is thinner, maples are bleeding to orange, and the sky has shifted to unmistakable fall blue. In our hedgerow, small beach plums, hardly bigger than grapes, are blushing ripe. We have finished our fall planting in the field (save garlic, which goes in with the first hard frost), and are facing the next pressing task: applying a thick layer of mulch to feed our soil, and deter weeds, before winter. Summer has—in its usual fashion—sped by in blurry cycle of growth, ripening, plucking, lugging, eating, dancing, listening, swimming, and reading.
Thankfully, despite my tendency to miss things before they’ve left, summer’s glow hasn’t vanished altogether. With more than our fair share of tomatoes, we have a special this week on all varieties ($5.75/lb)—for anyone eager to save the season, the time is now. Just in: sweet petite plums from John Bunker’s Super Chilly Farm, and from partner farms, a variety of winter squashes (sunshine kabocha, acorn, butternut, delicata, buttercup, spaghetti). In addition, we have lots of great lettuces, herbs, leeks, scallions, peppers, ground cherries, just-picked kales and chard, and the last haul of organic sweet corn.
HAPPENINGS

We have an upcoming farm pizza night with UPROOT PIE CO. on Saturday September 26th. This event is free and open to the public, but we’d love to have a headcount for Jess and her crew for pie numbers. Please register here—we hope you can join us, and snatch a late September chance to break bread and gather outdoors before the cold arrives.

ON OUR TABLE

With a glut of tomatoes at hand, and with the dread of not having such abundance around, I’m reaching for them most nights. This simple recipe for baked tomatoes, which sweetens and mellows as it cooks, is an unexpected comfort food.
