End of August

THE WEEK
The end of August and this week, I’m aware of the days cinching in (dark by 8), the sad cricket song that heralds fall, and the smell of apples warming the air. Every summer thunders past too quickly–this season in particular, summer swam by us in a blur. Last week we said goodbye to several members of our crew as they headed back to school. Over the next two weeks, with a thinner team, we will plant out our final fall field crops. But for now, we are in the fat of summer produce-wise: we have more succulent peaches from Locust Grove, great organic sweet corn, snacking peppers, string beans, fennel, tomatoes (heirloom, cherry, paste), cukes, zucchini, eggplant, and more.
HAPPENINGS

If you haven’t made it to any of our summer concert series with Crabtree Sessions, there are two concerts remaining! We have been agog at the talent that has taken the stage at the farm this summer, and feel especially lucky to be able to host these artists as they pass through this small corner of Maine.
This Saturday, 8/29 Lilliana Hudgens is performing at 7. From Asheville, NC, Hudgens sings haunting, beautiful songs that feel confessional and prophetic. We hope you can make it, tickets available here.
8/29, from 10-1, Darning it. CMCA presents its TOOLBOX session this Saturday at the Farm. Hosted by Angus McCullough, DARNING IT offers a chance to gather together to repair something in need of mending. More information, and to register, please head here (limited to 12 participants, we encourage you to register sooner than later).
Tuesday 9/1, from 10-11. Music Together at the Farm: Midcoast Music Academy leads a lovely kids sing-along at the farm, outside in our wooded grove. Next week is our final session at the farm, and these will be drop ins (no advance purchase).
9/5 IN THE FIELD Last summer, three DJs carried their record crates to the north edge of our field and spent an afternoon playing music with a single rule: no percussion. What followed — Brian Eno, whale-song field recordings, new age, jazz, and everything in between — was something the Midcoast Villager came out to document, and was so enjoyable it merited a sequel. This event is free, but we ask you to pre-register so we can get a headcount.

FROM THE PANTRY

Organic, packaged in attractive glass bottles, and made at the western edge of the state, Frontier’s Maple Syrup is our favorite. When I travel to friends near and far, I bring a bottle along to share. I find myself reaching for it while I cook– it is excellent in baked goods, or drizzled over summer berries, and of course hot pancakes, waffles, or French toast.
ON OUR TABLE

With an embarassment of tomatoes at hand, I like to cook a sheetpan of them down low-and slow on a Sunday. This recipe for risotto made with slow-roasted tomatoes is extra flavorful, sweet, mellow, but with attitude. I swap basil for sage for pure summer comfort food.
