There’s a kind of folk music that earns the word haunting rather than just reaching for it — where the atmosphere comes from the songs themselves and not from production tricks. The Spine Stealers are that kind of band. Fronted by songwriter Emma O’Shea, whose voice carries what one listener called an angelic and unsettling quality in the same breath, they make music shaped by dark lakes, fractured memories, and the kind of nostalgia that doesn’t quite comfort. Call it spooky folk — a tag that found them rather than one they chose, which is usually how the best descriptions work. In just a few years they’ve built a devoted following and taken their first national tour, which is the kind of trajectory that tends to mean something. Come with an open ear and expect to leave thinking about them longer than you expected.

TENDERWILD FARM WELCOMES CRABTREE SESSIONS

Crabtree Sessions has been happening on North Haven for five years — live music at Turner Farm, one of the most beautiful settings in Maine. The catch: unless you live on the island, you can’t go. No late ferries, nowhere to stay. This season, two farms on either side of the Pen Bay are joining forces to change that. Crabtree Sessions comes to the mainland for the first time, hosted at Tenderwild Farm — same spirit, same commitment to music that means something, new shore. If you’ve heard about these shows and wondered what you were missing, pull up a chair. We’re glad you’re here.

THE NICE TO KNOWS
