In this 3 hour workshop led by artist and educator Angus McCullough, participants will learn physical and conceptual frameworks of repair, to alter their relationship to currency, material culture, and their art practice. No experience necessary! Participants should bring something in need of mending, fixing, augmenting or improving.
This event takes place at Tenderwild Farm (33 Gurney St, Rockport ME). Options to work indoors and outdoors will be available.
About Darning It!
Something is broken in America, and it seems that most people are ready to throw it away. Scattered all around us are examples of its breakage —fast fashion, planned obsolescence, and single-use objects of all kinds, alongside mountains of their recent predecessors, all destined for the trash bin. This consumption culture did not emerge out of thin air, but instead represents a certain way of thinking and relating to the world. Like all philosophies, it is not the only way.
The conceptual framework of repair offers an alternative perspective, and not just in relation to damaged goods, but as a holistic lens through which to view the world. This lens can be used to investigate the material, legal, societal, and economic systems that we live in, and propose new ways to move towards a reality that is more sustainable, unique, and personally satisfying.
We often think of repair as returning an object to its original state of being, but the world is constantly in a state of entropy. Repair asks: “how do we manage our relationship to this change?” Are we unafraid to look directly at what is broken and have the courage to imagine how it might be mended? Sometimes, to truly un-break something, the repair changes it into an entirely new thing.
About Angus McCullough
Angus McCullough is a trans-disciplinary maker who works with objects, spaces, sounds, words, and systems. They are interested in the lives of objects, scales of time, and the vibratory nature of existence. Born and raised in New York City, they studied philosophy, music and architecture in academic and self-created learning situations. They have designed and/or shaped public spaces, private homes, bathing sanctuaries, soundscapes, vehicles, books, and forest ponds.
Their work has been shown internationally at venues such as the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Roman Susan, Momenta Art, BUOY, the Bennington Museum, Border Patrol, The Lust Gallery, SPACE gallery, SomoS Art House, Vernon Gardens, and Boxo PROJECTS, among others. Angus is a 2026 artist-in-residence at Monson Arts in Monson, ME, teaches at Skidmore College, is a founding member of Picture Lock One micro-cinema, and currently lives and works in Troy, NY.
